Creating a physical home is a natural instinct in many animals, including ourselves. This installation examines the line we draw between other animals’ homes that are referred to as naturally occurring and human structures which are considered ‘man-made’. Spaces constructed by other animals, such as ant hills, coral reefs, nests, beehives and burrowing system are just as intricate as any of our urban cities. It is interesting to observe that most, of the physical results of human labor are seen as innately against the natural order of things on Earth.

The installation uses cut paper to form a man-made, yet organic structure. We often use the word “nesting” to describe making a house feel more like a home. We do this by putting our personal objects in the physical space. The pattern cut into the paper of this installation mimics the artist’s parent’s kitchen curtains. The piece uses a small visual cue in her parent’s home and scales it up to create the entirety of this more ambiguous structure.

This installation explores the question, “If it was made by a human, is it naturally occurring?"
